The month of June has belonged to Mike Morse so far and his run has been to the great benefit of I Need Mauer Cowbell and FUBAR. Cowbell is threatening to break the record of 12 homers in one month that was set back in April and is poised to finally break the winning streak of Herman Obando. Both managers have chosen to hold on to Morse as the Nationals finish up their long home-stand against the Mariners and then visit the launching pad that is new Comisky Park in Chicago. Anyone else interested in retaining Morse’s services are out of luck for a while as his fantasy ownership rate has shot up to over 85%. There are a few other holdovers this week, Mike Moustakas, Ty Wiggington, and Danny Espinosa have seen their popularity rise to the point that they are no longer available but a few managers still are hoping that they have more left in the tank this month. As for players that have fallen into eligibility, managers may be surprised to see that Magglio Ordonez was waived while he was on the DL by enough fantasy players that he is now available. Also after a initial burst of popularity following his debut, Anthony Rizzo has fallen below 20% ownership. Rizzo is a highly touted prospect who was the lynch pin for the Padres in the Adrian Gonzalez deal; if he heats up as he gets acclimated to major league pitching, he will not be available long. The constantly shifting player universe and the success of teams that hold on to players on the rise shows the value of being able to lock your team in early. Turning back to June, its interesting to note how managers dealt with the latest round of inter league play. Home runs require at-bats and the DH rule threatens to limit some players in national league parks. Particular vulnerable players include Hideki Matsui, Juan Rivera, and Jack Cust. Some managers, like Homers, PW Cannons and Cat Scratch Weaver, thought the risk was worth it given Matsui’s late hot streak. On the other hand, the DH rule benefits national league players that are normally fighting for player time. Jason Giambi, Jason Pridie, and Jonny Gomes. Bloody Britton and Ol’ Dirty Bastardo picked up on this making Pridie a popular selection this week. Whatever, your reasons remember to play, there is a $50 gift card on the line!
