July Waiver Wire Home Run Contest Update

by Phil Hildreth on Sunday, July 10th, 2011

One second review, the June waiver wire challenge belonged to both Ty Wigginton and Mike Morse. The team of I Need Mauer Cowbell rode both of them to pull away from second place FUBAR. Cowbell set the new high water mark with 18 homers in one month and brought home the $50 prize. There is no rest for the champ however, as July started quickly with a short week and now the all-star break interruption.

FUBAR is back with strong team and was able to snag Danny Valencia before his early July hitting streak sent his fantasy ownership over the magic 20% threshold. Other managers were trying the opposite approach and tried catching falling players like Domonic Brown and Mike Moustakas. Some noted Mike Cameron‘s move from Boston to Miami and concluded that taking his talents to South Beach will result in more round trippers making him a popular choice.

After the all-star break, managers might want to check out the new young call-ups like Cincinnati’s Zack Cozart and Anahiem’s Mike Trout. Also some older players like Josh Willingham and Jim Thome will be back from DL stints. If history is a good predictor, Chris Johnson and Reid Brignac both hit four homers last July. Tyler Colvin hit 6 last July for the Cubs, but unfortunately he has been only getting at bats with the Iowa Cubs lately. Managers will be looking for an edge wherever they can find it this month because it’s likely that July’s winner could skate by with a low total. Luckily the $50 prize stays the same!
